A surf-trip to El Salvador is possibly the best cost-benefit option among destinations in Central America. Despite being the smallest country in Continental America, with just 300km of coastline, it offers a bunch of World Class surfing spots. Mostly right-hander point breaks. Also, it has tropical weather and warm water year round.
The coast of La Libertad is the most famous region for surfing in El Salvador. It locates only 40 minutes away from the El Salvador International Airport. The most popular breaks are Punta Rocas (a high-performance wave, one of the best surfing spot in whole Central America), Sunzal and Km. 59 among others. Sunzal is the best choice for beginners. If you are looking for a nice and cozy beachfront hotel, Casa de Mar Hotel is your place.
World Class Surfing in Wild East
The Wild East is the other region for surfing. It is about 3 hours from La Libertad and 2:30hs from El Salvador International Airport. The main breaks are Las Flores and Punta Mango. Las Flores, by the way, is my favorite spot. It is a long rippable beach break, with a takeoff in front of sharp rocks that opens all the way to the beach. Punta Mango is a fast, hollow, barreling point break. To go to Punta Mango take a boat in Las Flores early in the morning or you can reach there by car.
Due to crowd factor, unfriendly locals and visitors, I recommend avoiding national holiday or vacation season.
